Take Time to Refresh and Renew

We spent last week at the fabulous Camp Silver Bay on Lake George courtesy of the YMCA of the Adirondacks and their generous Military Families Refresh & Renew (R & R) Program. This organization salutes our military families by supporting their reintegration process with time away, time to rest, time to have fun and time to renew family relationships and personal well-being.

So relaxing

We found our week to be so incredibly rewarding  and restorative. Without the distraction of the outside world and the constant interruption of our electronic devices we were able to slow down, catch our breath and completely enjoy each other’s company. You choose whether to be busy all day or sit and do nothing but read or watch the lake. There is something for everyone – and I think we tried it all!

Robin Hood in the making

While the guys learned archery and went kayaking, I took yoga and meditation classes, went for walks and read surrounded by the most gorgeous backdrop imaginable. We went hiking, made leather bookmarks, learned to enamel(Elijah’s favorite,) make candles (really funny story about this) played shuffleboard and much more.

A nice spot to stop

My favorite part, no meals to cook! A wonderful variety of foods, prepared by someone else. No planning, no prep, no clean up and no dishes.

Sunset by the water

This was truly the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation I can remember…and it was provided for us in recognition of my husband’s service and our family’s sacrifices. It is not often that we get thanks and certainly not of this magnitude. It is much appreciated and the generosity will never be forgotten.

Finally Back to Life!

We have finally returned from a much enjoyed, well earned, post-deployment family vacation time-out. We all needed the time to decompress and get back in touch with being a family. Sometimes togetherness 24/7 for 10 days can be a bit much…but we managed to go on an extended vacation with all of our children and my mother and emerge unscathed.

Ever feel like running away?

We’re getting back to “normal life” now if there is such a thing… I’ll let you know how it goes next week when Anthony returns to his civilian job and our home life truly gets back on a somewhat normal schedule. Meanwhile the angst continues and the internal family battles rage over the possibility of future deployments and what that would mean for our family.  More about that another day…I’m still picking up the pieces from this one.
